Your Mac includes powerful security tools, but some deserve a quick review. These seven settings can help protect your files, accounts, and everyday work. Menu names can vary slightly depending on your version of macOS and whether your Mac is managed by your organization.

## 1. Install macOS security updates

Go to **System Settings \> General \> Software Update** and check for updates. Open the automatic-updates options and consider enabling security responses and system data files as well as automatic installation of macOS updates. Before a major upgrade, verify that important business software is compatible and that you have a current backup. If your organization manages updates, follow its IT policy.

## 2. Turn on FileVault disk encryption

Open **System Settings \> Privacy & Security \> FileVault**. FileVault protects information on your startup disk, helping keep it private if the computer is lost or stolen. When enabling it, follow the recovery-key instructions carefully. Store recovery information somewhere secure, separate from the Mac. On organization-managed devices, ask your IT provider whether recovery keys are already escrowed through device management.

## 3. Enable Find My Mac

Find My may help you locate a missing Mac or remotely lock or erase it when supported. If you use a personal Apple Account, open **System Settings \> \[your name\] \> iCloud** and review **Find My Mac**. Location Services may also need to be enabled. Businesses should coordinate this setting with their device-management and Activation Lock policies before making changes.

## 4. Review app access to sensitive information

Visit **System Settings \> Privacy & Security** and review categories such as Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Screen & System Audio Recording, Accessibility, and Full Disk Access. Remove permissions an app no longer needs. Be especially careful with Accessibility, screen-recording, and Full Disk Access privileges because they can expose sensitive activity or files. Avoid changing permissions for your organization's security tools without checking with IT.

## 5. Check your firewall

Open **System Settings \> Network \> Firewall**. The built-in firewall helps control unwanted incoming network connections. Consider turning it on, particularly for laptops used outside the office. Some business tools that accept incoming connections may need exceptions, so test your applications afterward or consult your IT team.

## 6. Protect your Apple Account with two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds a verification step when someone attempts to sign in with your Apple Account on a new device or browser. For a personal account, check **System Settings \> \[your name\] \> Sign-In & Security**. Confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled and review your trusted phone numbers and devices. For Managed Apple Accounts, authentication may be governed by your organization's identity provider and policies.

## 7. Require a password when your Mac is left unattended

Under **System Settings \> Lock Screen**, choose a short interval for requiring a password after the screen saver begins or the display turns off. Use a strong login password and set an appropriate inactivity timeout, particularly for Macs that access customer records or business email. Touch ID can make unlocking faster on supported devices without removing the need for a secure password.

## One more essential habit: Back up your Mac

Security settings reduce risk, but they do not replace backups. Use Time Machine or an organization-approved backup solution, and periodically verify that important files can be restored. For business systems, a tested backup plan is just as important as preventing unauthorized access.
